A lot of people today fall into a common misconception that just because car insurance is required that must mean it has to be expensive. The fact is there is nothing further from the truth. All you need to know to save on car insurance is what is absolutely required in your state, and what coverage you need. A lot of people make the costly mistake of just staying with the same company and the same policy they have had for years. But what they don't know is that they may not even need every item on their policy and are spending an unnecessary fortune on car insurance. Here we will discuss what coverages are available with car insurance policies, and help you weed out what you do and do not need in the hopes it will help you save on car insurance.

There are a number of ways to save on car insurance, but shopping around no matter how long you have been with someone will be your best way of saving money. This way you will be better able to customize your car insurance policy, and only buy what you need. You will also be able to compare prices and quotes from different companies, and see just exactly who is willing to earn ...
... your business.

Liability coverage is the one requirement you need for any car insurance in America. Liability coverage is required in every state, and additional car insurance coverage such as comprehension, collision, and uninsured motorist coverage is available in every state. But not all of these insurances are required in every state, so you want to compare your state requirements against your insurance policy to be sure that you are only buying what you need. If you have extra coverage on there that you have never used or don't think you will need, it is an easy way to cut costs right off the bat.

In addition to liability insurance, comprehensive and collision insurance is often purchased in a standard car insurance policy. Where liability insurance protects other drivers in the event of an accident where you are found to be at fault, the other two types of insurance will cover your own losses and damages in other events. Collision will protect you against loss in collisions where you are at fault, if you are not at fault the other party's liability insurance will cover you. If you have a good driving record and you're not required by your financing company to have collision insurance, you can sometimes save on this cost in some states. In states where you can't, you can always customize your policy by adding a deductible to your collision insurance, and this will lead to lower car insurance payments.

The same concept works for comprehensive insurance, which is not a requirement in every state. Some lending institutions will want you to have comprehensive insurance to protect them in the event of theft or damage, but not all will. Comprehensive insurance will protect you against loss in the event of theft or damage to your vehicle that is not caused by a collision. So this includes acts of god, natural disaster, vandalism, crime, and things of that nature. If you have anti-theft devices on your car or take measures to protect your vehicle against these kinds of damages, then you may not need comprehensive insurance. However if you like to have it for peace of mind, this is another kind of coverage that you can add a deductible on to your policy to lower your car insurance quotes.

When it comes to getting lower car insurance quotes, all it takes is a little know how and research to lower those costs. Shop around and customize your insurance policy and you will be saving money before you know it!
