Tarot Readings A History
The first documented sources of Tarot cards in history can be traced back to 14 the century Italy when they when they were introduced by the Italian aristocracy to play games, the pictures on the cards were inspired by the characters that were involved in celebrations and parades. The next big mention for Tarot cards and the introduction of tarot readings came in Europe during the late 1700s when they were adopted by occultists as a way of reading the future and planning personal fate maps.
Tarot was introduced wider Europe by its association with gypsy communities, although the gypsies are not credited with creating any of the early literature connected to tarot, they did pass on the knowledge to western Europeans while travelling across he continent. The most revered and informative book of the time, which attributed the art of tarot readings to the gypsies, is 'The Tarot of the Bohemians' which is still a major study aid of Divination students today.
Modern History of Tarot Readings
The se of tarot as a mystical tool for foretelling the future again took a dip in popularity until the 1920's when members ...
... of the Golden Dawn group reintroduced the art of tarot readings to England. During this time the now popular Crowley/Waite deck of tarot cards was introduced and has remained the most commonly used method of tarot readings for modern day fortune-tellers.
Because of the connotations that have been associated with Tarot over the years and their use in occultism and mysticism, much history about their importance has been lost. The use of tarot cards took a more scientific leaning in the 1960's when Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung started to use tarot cards and tarot readings in his research on psychoanalysis. This trend carried on with Timothy Leary who wrote a book entitled 'The Game of Life' which outlines how tarot can affect the neurosis of a person simply by giving the impression that is a solid tool for the prediction of future circumstances.
