Because many senior citizens live in residential centers such as nursing homes or assisted living facilities, the risks of picking up something contagious is not something that should be ignored. This includes situations such as the flu as well as contagious skin problems. Scabies is something that can quickly spread around a facility.

It isn't always easy to figure out the origin of the scabies. There are many residents that are coming back from hospitals so it is possible that is the source. Also, residents spend time with their grandchildren. Kids can catch scabies at school. It is also possible that a worker at the facility has picked it up through a second facility where they work or through personal connections.

Instead of a guessing game of the origins, the most important thing is to take action. Residents will be given a pesticide cream that is often applied by a nurse at the facility if they are infected. This may also be extended to their roommates. For cases of crusted scabies, which are called Norwegian, an oral pill may be given to help the production of eggs stop.

Staff will wash clothing on ...
... high temperatures and also dry it in heat. The rooms need to be disinfected and cleaned thoroughly. Astute directors will cover the mattresses in plastic and also cover the couches to prevent spreading this issue.

Sometimes physicians may ask other family members that don't live at the facility to also apply the cream. This can cause a dilemma for some people reluctant to apply a pesticide to their body. The most common formula is permethrin in the form of elimite. Other creams include lindane and crotamiton. Complications can occur when some of the residents that are infected have alzheimer's or memory problems. Compliance is not always possible due to psychological issues. Nontheless, staff should be making sure that the residents don't wash the cream off to early and that they avoid scratching the skin. Because seniors can also have allergic reactions to medications, the diagnosis process may be confusing and inconclusive.
