Medical Practice Management Software Is Still Useful
The government’s issuance of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act has created mass awareness for the use of Electronic Medical Records Systems. To help facilitate this awareness, the government has established several Regional Extension Centers nationwide to assist physicians in researching, purchasing, implementing, and demonstrating ‘Meaningful Use’ of a certified Electronic Medical Record System. However, Electronic Medical Records only address one component of a fully operational healthcare practice - the other being Practice Management.
Medical practice management software encompasses many of the daily operations that patients observe themselves. Appointment scheduling, patient registration and patient billing are critical to a successful physician’s practice. Handling these same tasks on paper while other operations are completed electronically can lead to inefficiency throughout the patient visit process. Since the awareness is geared towards Electronic Medical Records, physicians may be overlooking a very important and useful ...
... tool in their practice.
Practice Management software allows physicians to improve many of the front-office tasks and daily duties within their practice. In addition to streamlining these office tasks, physicians may also have the opportunity to use their practice management software in conjunction with their Electronic Medical Records Systems. Vendors who specialize in medical office software may also offer a complete, integrated practice management software and Electronic Medical Records product - essentially eliminating the need for two separate products. Practices which utilize two separately integrated products may run the risk of technical incompatibility.
Although the government pushes for Electronic Medical Records, it is important to evaluate all the areas of improvement in a healthcare practice. Historically, the healthcare industry has been the slowest to transition to newer and more efficient technology. If only half of a physician’s practice is converted electronically, the transition will essentially be slowed even further.
