Smartphones have become the latest gadgets where one can play games which are either free or priced at a dollar or two. With its various applications and easy internet connectivity, games can be downloaded at any time too! Nintendo, as an answer to these smartphones, has recently launched its gaming console, the pocket sized 3DS that can play games in 3D. Not only that, the 3DS can also take pictures in 3D with a pair of cameras mounted on the front of the console! The best feature of this pocket-sized console is that it uses the latest 3D technology to produce images that do not need glasses for viewing! In short, with 3DS portable gaming goes 3D.

The 3.5-inch display screen is coated with a parallel barrier material that functions as 3D viewing glass by making the eye see different sets of images. It is definitely a very good trick and is sure to open doors for many more glasses-free 3D viewing gadgets. The 3DS can be watched in 2D too at the press of a button which immediately switches off the 3D effect. This should be a welcome feature to many people who are not too comfortable playing games in 3D ...
... for long time periods.

The 3D effect is clean and crisp and is better than almost all of the 3D televisions available at the market. The best thing is that it does not tire the eyes. Even after quite a few hours of playing, you are not likely to feel your eyes paining or getting sore. However, Nintendo has warned that the 3DS is not to be used by children under seven due to health (mainly visual) risks.

Priced at $250, the plus points of the 3DS are its portability (pocket sized), breathtaking 3D effect and its built-in cameras that are capable of taking pictures in 3D. The negative side is its battery life which is around three hours before it needs to be charged. However, this is enough for people who want to keep themselves busy playing while travelling on buses or tubes. Thus, all in all, the 3DS is a truly groundbreaking device with its glasses free viewing and the amazingly crisp 3D effect.
