The recent introduction of Sysop-lead "crisis-proof" IT service management such as ITIL foundation courses moves to improve processes at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have been detailed and benefits to the medical treatment provider explained.

According to BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, initial problems with IT management and processes were identified when the informatics departments took on a new director, Alison Dailly.

Dailly quickly realised that while the department appeared to be busy, it was often not clear why this was. As well as this, a breakdown in communications between different areas of the trust was causing further IT headaches.

Eventually, the decision was made to bring in Sysop, to look at existing IT structures and processes and to come up with solutions to IT problems using ITIL best practice.

Sysop lead a number of ITIL foundation training events and specialised workshops, aimed at helping staff to understand how best to utilise the new IT infrastructure. Sysop also stimulated discussions between staff, to help open up lines of communication and encourage the teams ...

The firm were up against a number of problems in their attempt to introduce ITIL into the medical trust.

Founder and managing director Stuart Sawle explained: "There was an initial degree of scepticism that a best practice methodology adopted principally by traditional IT departments in the private sector would bring benefits to an informatics group who were largely non-IT, particularly in the specialised environment of an NHS Trust."

After helping staff at the NHS trust to change their thinking from what they do to how they do it, and "converting ITIL language into a language that was meaningful" to the employees,", it was agreed that Sysop will move to implement ITIL best practices at the trust for 12 weeks beginning this November.

After the initial 12 week work, a review of the situation will be undertaken and then ITIL set-up across all services will be set up.
