Today's world is amid a throwaway lifestyle. Many of us are unfortunately more concerned with appearance and price than the health of the planet, and the credit crunch is augmenting this attitude.

Garbage looks revolting on our landscape, uses vital funds and resources to handle and has a massive impact on the environment. Yet the fact is, the majority of us rarely ever come face to face with a real life rubbish tip, and this triggers us to have an 'out of sight, out of mind' attitude. We simply elect to overlook the fact that litter is a problem of gigantic size.

Everything from excessive food wrapping to clothing are these days readily discarded, even though almost all of it can potentially be recycled. The triumph of clothing retailers like Primark means shoppers now expect low-quality clothes which can be worn once or twice on a night out, and then dumped with minimal dent to the wallet.

And sadly, this approach has widened to larger goods. Goods including washers or refrigerators and even bathroom showers and baths are generally thrown straight to landfill when broken or damaged. ...
... Generally a repair would be a much simpler and less expensive job.

More often than not, people often look at the low expense of buying a new bathtub and do not even think of how they, and the environment, could be far better off finding a bath repairs specialist. However, once the old bath has been removed and the new one purchased, it's only then that the property owner comes to factor in the expense of re-plumbing and re-tiling (jobs that will frequently cost a couple of thousand pounds), and by then it’s far too late to revert back and merely repair the initial issue.

So what measures could we take to decrease the amount of rubbish we create?

When it comes to sizeable household items, never assume that the simplest solution is to just acquire a brand new one. Generally, the cost of mending the products will preserve your bank account, along with the environment. And whilst it may seem as if fixing something like a bath would be too pricey or complicated to justify, there are many of very skilled bath repairs professionals who can easily complete the job for a significantly lower cost than a replacement, and with final results that are practically invisible.

With regards to smaller goods, like clothing or food packaging, recycle all you can. While just chucking old goods in the bin is the easier choice, at a minimum, recycling will help make you feel better about yourself.

If you want to contribute further still, refrain from shelling out for low-cost, low-quality clothing to begin with. Forking out a bit more for decent quality will be cheaper in the long run. And in addition resist purchasing food presented in excessive packaging. Whilst supermarkets are starting to do their bit to lessen packaging, they still have quite a distance to go, and you can help by steering clear of items that still require work.

And when food shopping - carry your own bags. This, along with recycling, is among the most widely discussed concerns when it comes to rubbish and waste. It doesn’t take much to obtain some high quality shopping bags, and as well as doing your bit for the environment, you’ll also escape the unavoidable split bag that from time-to-time, occurs to even the best of us.

One final point, although it should be an obvious one - do not ever drop litter. Although littered streets are merely the beginnings of the all round issue, unclean streets are distressing to stroll down, and entirely avoidable. So quite simply, place your rubbish in a bin, or if you can’t locate one, hold onto it until you do.
