In the summer Lytton’s scorching summer temperatures can reach 100 F. making it one of the hottest spots in Canada. However, what makes this place a really hot place to visit are the two massive rivers that collide here and the Lytton rafting BC they offer.

The mighty Fraser River and legendary Thompson River converge at this place – and the result is one of the best whitewater rafting BC areas in Canada.

Several river rafting companies operate out of Lytton BC, with Kumsheen Rafting Resort the dominant one. Dozens of churning rapids race toward the Fraser through the Devil’s gorge. With ominous names such as the Jaws of Death, Terminator, or Devil’s Kitchen, they provide the greatest, rafting BC thrills on the river.

Kayakers are also attracted to surfing waves that build as the water level drops towards the middle of August. “The Green Monster is a big, beautiful, glistening wave,” Fandrich says. “At times, from bottom to top, it’s higher than a bus. It’s like a big ocean swell, but it just stands there.”

The Thompson is an azure, green river that pushes its way into the brown, silty, mighty Fraser. Rafters can see a sharp dividing line between the green and brown streams of water, which swirls and twirls in a variety of shapes and forms as the rivers mingle and merge. The Lytton First Nations people referred to this spectacle as the Kumsheen or Great Forks.

The biggest, most dangerous set of rapids on the Fraser are the surging whirlpools at Hell’s Gate – a massive cataract that can have as much as half a million cubic feet of water passing through it every second. Even this foaming white water makes great river rafting in August.
