Volunteering For Everyone

Since its establishment in 1961, many people have volunteered through Peace Corps, a successful program run by the United States Government. It has proven very popular due to its attractive conditions, which include an allowance, health coverage, and a comprehensive training program, to mention just a few.
But it has its downsides, too. For a start, to be eligible, the potential volunteer needs to be an American citizen. And certainly not everyone is! Secondly, the program requires at least a two-year commitment. This demanding factor is what puts many eligible people off. It would fit someone who wants a somehow total break up with their lives, but for the everyday citizen it would mean to leave a life behind, maybe including a job or a partner. While “parking” them for a short period may be feasible, it is certainly unbearable with such a long commitment.
Thankfully, there are many peace corps alternatives available for those who don’t like or fulfil the requirements of the program. Some offer the same benefits, including allowance, housing, or ...
... even a payment towards college or graduate school, but with shorter commitments. Others will also provide those benefits, but they will need to be paid for. There is also the option of volunteering locally, which can be done either by committing to a particular project or by volunteering for a particular organization for a period of time. The options are as wide and flexible as non-profit organisations are out there, but all of them will normally offer training and pocket expenses.
Another option is working for a non-profit. Why not make some money while doing some good? While many people do volunteer teaching in Asia, a worth looking option is becoming an English as a Second Language teacher.
What excuse do you have now to engage in a successful volunteering program?
