Temperature and how to control it

Temperature is a scientific scaled unit of measurement that shows how cold, warm or hot something is. We generally use thermometers to work out temperature in an enclosed space to see what the atmospheric temperature is.

These days, in our homes and work environments, we like to have temperature-controlled rooms. It's ideal to live and work in more comfortable and temperate conditions, so we're not too hot and not too cold, giving us a healthier lifestyle.

Thermostats are used to regulate central heating or air conditioning systems to a stable temperature. If the atmospheric temperature lowers, an air conditioning system will output heat to make the temperature rise, and vice versa - if it's too warm, the unit will begin to cool the environment to a chosen level. Thermostats are electronic units that are linked to a temperature control system to regulate what is output. This control system helps keep energy costs down and regulates the energy used accordingly with location, time of day and year.

... Control Systems

There are various types of temperature control systems. These systems use energy transference techniques through convection, conduction and condensing to gain the desired temperature. Convection and condensing methods use liquids such as water, oil or refrigeration coolant to transfer cooling or heat energy into an environment, whereas conduction uses more direct transference methods.

The type of temperature control system required depends on the sort of environment to be controlled and also what type of climate you live and work in. These can be anything like the home, the work place or more rigorously controlled environments such as science laboratories, food and manufacturing factories.

In the home, generally situated in cooler climates, the most common type of temperature controller system is Gas Central Heating. Water filled wall mounted radiators are placed in strategic places throughout the home and interconnected via pipes to a gas heated water boiler that is temperature regulated by a thermostat. If you live in hotter climates another popular and perhaps more necessary system for both the home and work is air-conditioning type of cooling products. Air conditioning units are heat exchangers that pull in cooled air, refrigerated by an external condenser unit, while pushing out hotter, unconditioned air back outside. A thermostat device inside the room regulates this system. Home units are generally quite small, and a small condenser is fitted just outside a window. However office buildings with a centrally controlled shared air-con system will need a much bigger condenser, normally situated in a safe unoccupied part of the building, for example on top of a flat roof.

Industrial environments such as Laboratories or manufacturing spaces will need a much more tightly controlled temperature controller system to regulate the environment to within a degree of accuracy. Therefore a much more expensive industrial temperature controlling system is needed, but essentially these are based on the same scientific principles. Smaller tolerance, more precise thermostats are used, controlling huge thermo heating and refrigeration units are installed to maintain a perfectly controlled environment.
