At just the start of the nineties, it was regarded as normal for the entire family to come together in front of one tv and watch whatever they felt like. Twenty years later, the idea seems positively archaic.

For a start, most individuals have more than one television in their home. And then, additionally, we have the internet, and in regards to tv, it's rewriting the rulebook on everything.

First of all, we have VOD (video on demand) platforms that give us anything we choose, any time we want. Thus, in the case of the Sky Player, we could choose that we would like to watch a episode that was originally televised earlier in the week, easy, you only have to sign in and watch it whenever is convenient.

As well as allowing us to jump back and forwards in time, in a way, it also means that we are able to watch anything we choose, anywhere we choose. Keeping with applications such as the Sky Player, it's not a case of only being able to view your Sky subscription at home, you could have that downloaded on your laptop and enjoy it wherever you happen to be, and it makes no difference whether you're at home or ...
... not.

Of course it's not only limited to laptops. Nearly all the tv companies have designed mobile apps that allow users to enjoy television directly on their mobiles. That means, if you've got a broadband connection, or a solid 3G connection, you are able to view anything you pick, anywhere you like.

The challenge is, though, a good internet connection. The quickest connection for smart phones is generally a WiFi connection, this means you've more or less got to be in or close to a house with WiFi that you are able to access. However as wireless internet speeds up, we'll be able to watch whatever we want on our mobiles no matter where we happen to be.

So, tv is yet one more substantial manner in which the internet has quite simply changed everything. With tvs and pcs becoming ever closer to becoming one and the same, who knows what our broadband connections will give us in the future.
