Cancelled Dental Appointments Rise In Uk

More patients in England are risking severe oral health problems by cancelling or deferring dental appointments, according to research by the British Dental Association (BDA).
Money worries are being blamed for this increase, with many cash-strapped patients seeing regular dental checkups and non-emergency treatment as a luxury rather than a necessity, particularly if they don’t have dental health insurance to help them to cover the costs.
However Dr Susie Sanderson, chair of the BDA’s executive board, believes that ignoring your oral health is not only unhealthy, but potentially more expensive in the long run.
“It's understandable that, at a time when there is widespread concern about household finances, some patients' financial anxieties are leading them to defer dental appointments and treatment. Achieving short-term money savings at the expense of longer-term health problems really isn't wise though. Neglecting your oral health can increase both the complexity of the problems you face and the cost of the treatment you must eventually have.”
Sovereign Health Care is proud of ...
... its long history of charitable giving through the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust. In particular, over the past 6 years we have donated in excess of £3.5 million to community and health related charities. These donations have helped to support the delivery of health care and welfare services and to fund pioneering research.
The Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust is funded from the commercial side of our organisation. The money we donate is from investment returns and surpluses generated over many years.
The BDA conducted a survey of over 250 UK dentists, with 59% stating that they had seen an increase in patients cancelling appointments. More than a third also reported an increase in demand for emergency treatment in the past twelve months, suggesting that patients who defer dental treatment are paying for it later on.
Patients who worry about the cost of dental checkups are advised to look into a dental plan. Health care plan providers such as Sovereign Health Care often allow you to claim cash back against a range of dental healthcare treatments including fillings, check-ups, X-rays, dentures and hygienist fees plus a range of other everyday health care costs. Oral disease has been linked to a number of more serious medical problems, so don’t let money worries put your family’s health at risk.
