The Key To Pond Liner Longevity
There are several factors that can affect how long a pond liner can last. One of the most important factors of course is what the pond contains. Different chemicals can affect how long a liner will last. Giving your pond liner supplier as much information as possible will help you choose the correct pond liner for your specific containment needs. Most ponds though contain just water so this article will mostly discuss those types of pond liners.
For the standard water pond liner, the biggest culprit in destroying a liner, more often than not, is the suns u.v. rays. Although woven coated reinforced polyethylene liners are often an excellent, affordable, choice for a pond liner, these products must be buried if you hope to have your liner last over 15 years or more. These products can often come with a 5 year u.v. warranty but have a difficult time lasting longer than that.
For reinforced liners, a coextruded product is needed for a pond liner that will remain unburied. These products cost more but ...
... give you the comfort in knowing that they can last for a very long time in the sun.
Another factor in having a pond liner that lasts a long time is to make sure that the edges are buried at all times. Although reinforced liners can lost a very long time, a pond liner that isn’t buried correctly will be ravaged by most standard winds very quickly, you must allow wind to get beneath your pond liner.
If there happens to be rocks in the pond, a geotextile is recommended to protect the pond liner from getting punctured. Reinforced Liners are quite puncture resistant, but over time rocks can slowly but surely push their way through a liner if there is enough water pressure on the liner. It is important to have a pond free of rocks or a geotextile underneath the pond liner to ensure this does not happen.
If all of these steps are followed many high quality liner products can work well over 20 years.
