Thousands of prospective students are looking into beginning an accelerated BSN each and every semester. Before you begin the process though, you better take a few moments to understand what the requirements, and prerequisites, are for admission into these kinds of programs. The standards aren't too strict or daunting, however, there are some basics that you will need to have covered to get underway.

Accelerated BSNs are, in general, second degree programs. Second degree programs allow for shorter programs of study, because the first degree provided the basic educational background. In order to join a second degree accelerated BSN, which can be completed in less than a year, you then obviously need a first degree, a bachelor's in any other field.

Increasingly, accelerated nursing degree programs also require minimum GPA standards. The baseline for this kind of requirement is a 3.0 for your previous degree. The reasoning behind this is not only to bring in qualified, intelligent and motivated students, but also because it means that the first degree you took actually provided you with knowledge you can continue ...
... to use in your second degree and in the upcoming career.

As mentioned, accelerated BSNs are second degrees, and they bridge upon what you already learned. That's why you need to the minimum GPA, to make sure you're prepared for the accelerated setting, and you can jump right into the core classes for nursing. This is what allows you to complete the program in as little as 10 to 12 months.

Another requirement that many accelerated BSN degrees have is that you will need to have taken a sampling of some specific courses. These include physical sciences like biology and anatomy, and may also include social sciences, and classes that cover other areas of the diverse field of nursing, including communication, psychology and more.

The good news is that if you don't have one or a few of these required classes, you will generally still be accepted into the program of your choice. The difference will be that you then will need to take that course in the BSN program. This enables you to proceed, but adds extra classes and time onto the length of the full program itself, which is why some people end up taking closer to 18 months to complete their program.

Every nursing program is going to be different from the next in terms of their requirements and other specific standards or regulations. Therefore you need to take the time to look into the program you're applying to in order to make sure you're up to their standards. The above specifications though are pretty basic and fairly common, so it should give you a good understanding about what to expect and look for.

Obviously the first and foremost factor for a second degree accelerated nursing program is the first degree itself. You may also need a minimum GPA level, as well as specific previous completed courses. Either way, just make sure to find out what to specifically look for so you don't end up with any unwelcome surprises at the last minute on your way to an accelerated BSN.
