Spring Assisted Knives are in many ways, direct competitors for switchblades market. Spring Assisted Knives might not fulfill all the motion pictures fantasies of blades popping at a push of a button, but they certainly as fast and as lethal. And what’s more; there isn’t a federal law prohibiting them for the regular Joe.

Tactical purposes

The Impaler goes for around 30 bucks, certainly has the looks, the blade and configuration of a tactical switchblade. You push down on the guard’s back stub and the blade pops out like a devil. It’s also a big one, 13” open.

The Figaro Italian style switchblade (probably made in China) sells for 70-100 dollars. Extremely impressive, people kind of jump at the loud ‘clank’ sound when the blade pops out. Much more complicated to operate than spring assisted knives, because it comes with a safety lock that is a pain to deactivate.

Field and maintenance purposes
There are hundreds of brands and off-brand manufacturers of spring assisted knives. SOG came up with the Trident-TF series, one of the most interesting, practical and best ...
... quality article among all the spring assisted knives. It features several smart options.
1.The blade, when folded, serves as a belt cutter. All belt cutters that we encountered, cannot be sharpen, this one does.
2.The S.A.T (SOG Assisted Technology) opening system is a patented one. It makes the firing process very similar and as fast to what you get with a switchblade.
3.Most of spring assisted knives blades are of crappy steel. Here the blade is made of an very good steel (probably AUS-8 or similar) and it’s drop-point configuration suits any cutting purposes.

The Trident FT-2
Yes it is a bit expensive, $115-150, relatively to the average price of spring assisted knives, but worth it, we think.

In the pocket
A lot of hand impaired people use a switchblade for obvious reasons, as pocket knives. Some states authorize that, other do not. The solution, again, is to use one of them spring assisted knives; they are as easy to open as it may be.
Here are two itsy bitsy interesting items, one firing automatically by pushing a button, the other using the usual spring assisted knives firing system.

For a few bucks you can get one of the tiniest, cutest, easy to open (push down the back guard stub) spring assisted knives. It’s the kind that you don’t feel carrying it in your pocket.

Same deal, but you might can be trouble with your local authority if you get caught with this one in your pocket. Yes, it’s tiny, nothing to it, yet the super-intelligent lawmakers labeled it as a weapon.
California authorizes automatic knives with blades under 2”. You can use this one there.

Last but not least.
Whether automatic or spring assisted knives, a multi-blade knife is not easy to come by. The reason, maybe, is that it’s a bit complicated to manufacture, and/or no enough demand for, and/or lack of public awareness that such option exist, in first place.

Both samples below are double bladed spring assisted knives, that solve the problem of choosing between a knife with plain edge, versus a half-serrated one.

That’s one of the ‘Double Jeopardy’ series 2 twin blades spring assisted knives. One blade comes with a smooth/plain edge, the other is fully serrated.
This knife is can also be perceived as a terrifying weapon when someone comes at you with both blades deployed.

Here is one of the most useful ‘workhorses’ among spring assisted knives; the St. Bernard, that is also a rescue knife (comes with a belt cutter, and a glass breaker).
There aren’t many spring assisted knives as practically and versatile as this one is.

The Bottom line: Spring assisted knives are a very good, legal substitute to automatic knives a.k.a switchblades.
