Egypts Tourist Sector Set For Revival After Tough Times In Early 2011
Unless you have been cast away on a desert island for the past few months, you will probably have observed the revolutions that have been going on around the Red Sea recently. However, the biggest news story of them all occurred in one of the most frequently visited countries in the world, Egypt. The protests ultimately succeeded in removing the dictator Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak. The end of this regime was cause for great celebration in Egypt and around the world, but the tourist industry in the country has paid a heavy price for this change. According to recent reports, more than 200,000 visitors decided to curtail their stay during the revolution, and visitor figures were, on the whole, drastically down on the same period in the previous year. This is not good news for a country in which over two million people are employed in the tourist sector, an industry that was already suffering in the aftermath of the recent global economic crisis.
There are signs that the industry is set to recover strongly this year, though. Egypt has a long history of bouncing back from blows to their tourist industry and emerging ...
... even stronger. The principal reason behind this is the fact that Egypt is generally thought to be one of the safest places in the region for visitors, and can boast to an astonishing range of the most exciting tourist attractions and sites of historical import. For example, is there anyone who would not be blown away by actually seeing the Sphinx, or stunned by the sheer scale and majesty of the Great Pyramids of Giza? By the same token, who could be immune to the mysterious charms of the River Nile, or the mystery of Tutankhamun? These things act as magnets for tourists from all over the world, and have remained popular with holidaymakers since the dawn of affordable air travel. Being in the news so much has brought the country of Egypt very much to the forefront of the public consciousness, particularly now that it is a fully democratic state. Also, for many tourists, the chance to visit a country in the throes of liberation will be an attractive proposition. For people of this generation, visiting post revolutionary Egypt is the equivalent of being in Berlin when the wall came down, a newly liberated country with a lot of optimism around. Although the tourism sector in Egypt has taken a bit of a knock in recent times, it is sure to bounce back sooner rather than later.
