Pedestrians hear sirens and most people in vehicles hear police sirens, but in some new vehicles the driver and passengers are so sound protected they fail to hear anything. What that means is they may not see the flashing lights of a police vehicle and fail to hear the approaching siren until it's too late. New vehicles are being designed to virtually cut out all road noise, add to that loud music or people on cell phones and you begin to see how police sirens can sometimes not be heard. Not being aware of road noise can mean you drive less distractedly but when it’s to the extent of cutting out all noise then that can be dangerous.

This soundproofing of vehicles presents a new problem not just for police, but all emergency response vehicles and teams. A police car with flashing lights and police sirens going full blast can only mean one thing; they are responding to a priority one call. Something new is being introduced into the police sirens world, and that's a siren that you can not only hear but also feel! Now that may seem somewhat odd but this has been trialed to great effect by some ...
... departments. What this new breed of police sirens do is break through the sound aspect and produce a vibration that can be felt inside a vehicle.

The new kind of police sirens produce a noise that is denser and lower in tone than the standard wail or shriek of a standard siren. The vibrations produced by the lowered tone actually projects along the road surface and into the structures of vehicles and can be felt by the driver rather than heard. In places where this new type of police sirens has been tested, they have seen a noticeable difference in that people move without hesitation. The vibration of the new siren means drivers may not know what is happening but it makes them look up and take note of what's around them enabling them to see police or emergency vehicles.

Anything that helps emergency responders get to where they need to be quickly has to be worthwhile. A decrease in response times means more lives are saved and that is something that cannot be ignored. This new type of police sirens are not used in all states and is still being trialed around the country but it is an advance that has huge potential. The new sirens don't need any additional operation, and officers can still make the decision to use or not to use the same as they do now. However, if these types of police sirens are fitted to vehicles the potential for officers to get safely to where they need to be is increased.

This new type of siren is suitable for all kinds of emergency vehicles and not just for use as police sirens. There is a cost consideration with these new types of siren but when weighed against the possible time saving and therefore life saving issues it may be a worthwhile investment. Of course there will always be the standard police sirens and these are effective in most cases. However, if you are sat cocooned in your vehicle and feel a strange vibration all around you then you have been targeted by a new type of siren. If you do feel that the message is the same, move over as a vehicle needs to pass or you need to pass them safely.
