Regardless of the emergency, regardless of the vehicle that attends one thing all police vehicles need is a police siren. Without the police siren the vehicle may not be noticed, we aren't always in direct line of sight and when we don't see the flashing lights, we hear the siren. In poor light conditions, the flashing lights on emergency vehicles are not always seen, especially during the night with poor weather. The police siren on vehicles is crucial in such situations and whilst the siren would not always be going at the scene of an emergency, they will be sounded on the road when they are approaching vehicles that they need to pass. Without the police siren, the vehicle is far more vulnerable on the highway and much more likely to be missed by other road users. The siren is something that has been used for some time. Initially you would hear a siren in connection with warnings during WWII, and they had a very valuable job. The siren was a warning of an air raid and it offered an advance warning so people could get to shelters. The same early warning is used today but it is for emergency vehicles, to warn pedestrians and road users. It does often seem that we constantly hear the sound of a police siren on our streets but that is because all police vehicles will have them.

When you hear a police siren and you are in your vehicle then you need to be aware of the 'Move Over' law that now exists in most states. You could end up with a hefty fine and points on your license if you fail to act appropriately.
