3d is today’s ‘it’ technology. From 3d televisions to 3d cameras to 3d mobile phones to 3d video games, this latest sensation has taken over almost any gadget that has a screen. And why not? It transports the viewer to a completely new dimension where you are almost forced to duck behind the table as lions, tigers, sharks, whales, elephants come charging at you, or can feel you are one of the footballers kicking the ball across the field, or enjoy the adrenaline rush in a car race – that is what 3d does to you!

However, every brilliant invention has its own drawbacks too. Continuous 3d viewing can negatively impact vision especially in younger children. Both Nintendo (the home video game console manufacturer which has launched its latest 3DS, which is the ultimate gaming experience in 3d and can be viewed without glasses too) and Toshiba (manufacturers of television sets) have issued warnings about damages which could happen to the vision of kids below the age of six. But still, the advantages of watching in 3d far outweigh its disadvantages. Indeed the popularity of this three dimensional technology has increased ...
... manifold since its use in the portrayal of the fabulous world of Pandora in the superhit movie Avatar (released in 2009).

Since then, Samsung, the Korean giant has sold more than 2 million 3d television sets (within a year) and is expected to hit a huge 8 million figure by the end of this year! Not only Samsung, indeed similar figures are coming from the other manufacturers, LG, Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba. And this craze for 3d is not just limited to televisions, 3d channels, 3d mobile phones and 3d video games are all catching up as well. For example, since the launch of Sky 3d, the first TV channel dedicated entirely to 3d programs, in the UK in 2010, it has gathered an astonishing 70,000 customers in the first three months itself!

It is not difficult really to understand this sudden craze and hype for this ‘it’ technology, after all who doesn’t want a real-life like experience every time (even while reclining lazily on your favourite sofa!) they stare into a screen?
