Social Media Marketing (SMM) has come a long way since its inception. Social networking sites are being recognized in a big way by organizations. Of all the social networking sites, Facebook and Twitter have become household names. Hence, it is inevitable for us to focus our attention on these social networking sites and see the difference of approaches taken by both these sites to fulfill the ultimate objective of the online users.

• Goal: Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and fellow Harvard students in February 2004. It was originally built to enhance communication amongst students giving them an advantage in sharing information with other users easily and conveniently. Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey in 2006. The original idea behind its creation was to provide an SMS platform for the internet which enables users to send messages across the globe.

• Traffic and Content: Facebook has more than 500 million members till October 2010 and is the second most-visited website in the world, the Numero Uno being Google. There are more than 60 million Facebook updates in a day which is amazing. Twitter has ...
... more than 175 million users till October 31, 2010 with an average of 55 million tweets in a day.

• Application Program Interface (API): Users need to log in to get relevant data from the website. Whereas, in case of Twitter, a user’s data is freely available to anyone irrespective of whether they are members on the social networking site or not.

• Viral promotion: The process of establishing repo with the users takes time. Organizations have to establish meaningful conversations initially and then precede with their social media plans if they are using Facebook. In case of Twitter, it is very easy to get your message across in a straightforward manner without any fuss.

• Privacy: Facebook provides a congenial environment to the users. Their data is protected from other users and users have the option to set their profile page social and private. It is not shared with users who are not registered and are not familiar to the user. Users can even have filters to protect their comments and pictures from being displayed to total strangers. Twitter has no filter. But users can protect their tweets by locking them from people seeing them without their permission. Thus, we can say that Twitter is an extrovert tool while, Facebook is an introvert tool. It is also to be noted that most Twitter users have Facebook account but most Facebook users do not have Twitter account.

• Blueprint: In case of Facebook, users can see their friend’s updates like news feed. They can control the sharing part on a user’s wall by using privacy settings whereas in case of Twitter, users can see updates from people they follow in a chronological manner.

Twitter does not have the personal touch as Facebook. But the ability of Twitter to make you meet numerous people in a go makes it a favorable option. One major advantage with Twitter is it cuts the clutter and provides relevant information pertaining to people and brands that you follow. This makes it a favorable option to promote your brand. Facebook provides an opportunity to the users to have more open and longer communications with an ability to share pictures, videos, and other interesting contents. The biggest difference between Facebook and Twitter is; users cannot use them the same way. Users have different conversations on Twitter than on Facebook. Hence, it is very important for organizations to familiarize themselves with the functionalities of both, Facebook and Twitter. Linking both these sites will give organizations a great chance to showcase their brands all around the globe.
