Why We Cellebrate The 5th Of November With A Bonfire And Fireworks
Ever wondered why we have a bonfire of firework night? Heard the stories of Guy Fawkes but never really knew what the story was about? Read on to find out the history of bonfire night - the 5th November.
In 1605 a man called Guy Fawkes and some helpers attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London using 36 barrels of gun powder in the basement. Their plan was to kill King James and his Leaders because of some laws against Roman Catholics. The group of men was led by Robert Catesby believed the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly. Catholics had to practise their religion in secret.
The group of men bought a house next door to the parliament building because the cellar went under the parliament building, they planned to blow up the parliament when the King opened parliament the next time. Some of the men got cold feet and let the plan leak which led the King to make plans to stop this attack.
Out of the group of men Guy Fawkes was given the job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and then light the fuse at the right time. On the morning of 5th November, soldiers ...
... discovered Guy hidden in the cellar and arrested him. He was taken to the Tower of London where he was tortured and questioned about the rest of the plotters. Eventually he was executed.
To celebrate the King James survival, he ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire every year on the night of 5th November. Some of us English have been known to wonder, in a tongue in cheek kind of way, whether we are celebrating Fawkes' execution or honouring his attempt to do away with the government.
In London this November the 5th there is a display at Bishops Park which is open from 18:00, with the fireworks displays between 19:30 and 20:00. Crystal Palace has a fireworks display which opens from 18:00, and the fireworks display is between 19:00 and 20:30. Wimbledon Fireworks display is open from 18:30, and the fireworks display between 18:45 and 20:30.
If you want to celebrate King James survival or honouring Guy Fawkes and his plotters attempt to do away with the government, there will be plenty of bonfire nights in your area. Even if you couldn't care less about the history of the night, going out standing around a bonfire watching fireworks shooting across the sky is a great way to spend one night of the year.
