Being certified is important in any career and this is no different. There isn't just one organisation normally and this is the case for the phlebotomy certification as well. The certification is extremely important because without them, jobs can be hard to come by especially as a phlebotomist. Hospitals are likely not even to give you an interview if you haven't undertaken some of the necessary exams, these can be completed at hospitals themselves or blood centers and laboratories.

Currently only two states in the USA require you to have one of the certifications but it is still highly recommended to get trained up and recognized. Every employer wants proof that you can for-fill the job and won't require a lot of on the job training. Also if you have already been trained and have the certificate then you are less likely to make mistakes which could always lead to potential lawsuits. Companies don't want to take on this risk, so you can see why the certification is necessary.

The exams are normally carried out on the computer and not by pen and paper, and the questions ...
... will normally flow through linking the previous to the next. This will help the examiners see how deep your understanding is of the topics is; it's imperative that all topics are covered in depth for this reason.

The exams will always be similar with all exam board organizations so you have little to worry about there when signing up for a training course. Phlebotomy training courses will teach you the practical and theoretical sides and this can be used for any exam board. It is likely that exams will be taken every few years to update their certification and to also make sure knowledge is up to date.

You may find that fellow students aren't starting out in the field and have been in it for many years. The reason for this normally is that they want to increase their chances for promotion or pay increases. Already working in the field it is important that you don't fail the exam and study just as hard if you were new to the subject as this will not look good to employers. Training books and past exam papers can normally be obtains for the exam board organization and should be free (extra bonus material may cost more).

The phlebotomy certification is great to have and I recommend it to anyone looking to get in to the field. The job is great with flexible hours and great pay which is about the average.
