Mitsubishi Manufacturing Corp is a major manufacturer of electronic discharge machining (EDM) equipment. They are well known for the capabilities and durability of their products.

Electrical discharge machining centers are typically used for metals that are very hard or cannot be adequately machined using regular machining center equipment. EDMs can cut and intricately carve electronically conducive materials into various shapes as needed, but is a non conventional method reserved for difficult to work materials. These materials cannot be successfully machined using the milling, grinding, drilling and turning capabilities of typical machining equipment.

The process works by causing a series of tightly controlled breakdowns and restoration of the dielectric liquid between two electrodes—one of which is usually the work piece being machined. By breaking down the dielectric liquid, material is removed from the work piece. By flushing (or restoring) the dielectric liquid, the debris is removed and the process can be restarted again. This is done for as many times as it takes the work piece to be fashioned appropriately.

... are two different types of EDMs, sinker and wire EDMs. Wire EDMs can cut thick plates of metal that other machining equipment can't manage. That's why their functions are usually referred to as wire cutting.

Mitsubishi Wire EDMs can cut plates as much as 300 millimeters thick. They feature a wire running from a continuous spool through the work piece, which is usually made of brass. Then the work piece is plunged into a tank of dielectric liquid. (Often this liquid is de-ionized water). This thin wire is held between two diamond guides, one upper and one lower, which are usually remotely programmed to move in a desired way through the use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) interface machining technology.

They also feature multi-axis movement capabilities with multi-heads to cut different parts at the same time. They have controls to automate self-threading and to prevent shredding and wire breakage. The upper axis guide can usually move independently also, giving Mitsubishi Wire EDMs the ability to cut very intricate designs and shapes.
