When we mention tulip, we may naturally think of the Netherlands - Tulip kingdom. However, many people may not know that the Canadian capital Ottawa held a grand annual tulip festival since 1951 and it is known as Tulip Capital. The origin of festival has a really legendary history.

Canadian Tulip Festival was born in peace. During World War II, the Dutch royal family came to Canada for asylum. On January 1943, Princess Juliana is about to give birth, but unexpected thing happened. According to the Canadian law, people who are born in Canada automatically become Canadian citizens. According to the Dutch royal succession, prince or princess should be born in the Dutch territory in order to be recognized as a member of the royal family. In accordance with the prevailing circumstances, Princess Juliana cannot return to the Netherlands.

Finally, the Canadian government passed a bill to place a maternity ward of the Ottawa Hospital under the sovereignty of the Netherlands Government. January 19, 1943, Princess Juliana, gave birth on a third daughter Margaret in "Holland Land".

In 1946, Princess Juliana sent another 20,000 tulip bulbs to express her gratitude for warm reception of Canadian people. In the same year, the Dutch Parliament passed a bill to return the sovereignty of maternity ward of the Ottawa Hospital back to Canada.

Since then, the Canadian capital Ottawa has received 10,000 tulip bulbs from Dutch family every year. And Ottawa has become the famous travelling places of millions of tourists.
