It is relevant to point out that each of these two battery operated machines have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are planning to purchase either of the two, it is advisable that you may keep the following facts in mind:

Advantages of Mobility Scooters:

- They are available in a number of different designs. None of these looks like a wheel-chair.
- As a facility for easy transportation, many of the models can be folded down or disassembled.
- Some of the models come with an extra battery to attract the customers.
- Comparatively they are much lighter in weight than the power chairs.
- In comparison with power chairs, they have higher ground clearance and as such, ideal for uneven terrain.
- They can safely maneuver both steeper inclines and slopes.
- A swivel seat which locks at 90 degree angle allows easy sitting without causing any obstruction to maneuver around.
- They are suitable for moving around outdoors - like malls, grocery stores or neighbourhood Club.
- Price-wise, they are much cheaper than Power Chairs. Most of the models are available ...
... at under US$1,000.

Disadvantages of Mobility Scooters:

- Requires Upper Body Strength – There is no steering wheel as in a car. It has to be maneuvered with handlebar similar to the handlebars on a bike. The user, thus, needs upper body strength and strong arms to operate and control the scooter.
- There is no back support as in a car’s driving seat – with the result that the user has to sit upright and utilize his upper body strength and two arms to maneuver around.
- They are suitable only for those users who can stand and walk short distances by themselves or with the help of a walking stick.
- As the scooter has a large frame and wide turning radius, it is not suitable for indoor use.
- Unfortunately, most insurance companies refuse to grant insurance coverage for mobility scooters.

Advantages of Power Chairs:

- They have adjustable seats to suit the need /comfort of the user.
- Depending on the physical incapability of the user, directional controls may vary with the requirement of each individual user. Controls in the form of a joystick, chin levers, etc. are optional.
- They are much smaller in size than the mobility scooters.
- They are ideal for indoor use because of their small turning radius-thus allowing easier maneuverability within the house.
- The in-built battery charger facilitates easy charging of the battery. You just have to insert the provided plug in any wall outlet of your home to begin charging.
- Adjustable foot rests are provided for the comfort of the user.
- May be insured with the written consent of the Physician. However, most of the insurance companies will cover only certain percentage of the cost of the Power Chair – depending on the prevalent practice in the area where such companies operate.

Disadvantages of Power Chairs:

- Comparatively they are more expensive than the electric mobility scooters. Even the cheapest ones cost above US $1,000/-.
- They cannot be folded down or disassembled.
- They are extremely heavy. Transporting them from one place to another is quite a hassle.
- They have low Ground Clearance-with the result that maneuvering over rough terrain can be very challenging.
- Power Chairs cannot carry any extra luggage. They can only carry the user. They do not have any baskets in front or below the seat - like the mobility scooters have.
- They have lesser moving power than the Mobility Scooters. They are equipped with smaller electric motors and can drive up an 8 degree inline at the most.
