Victory For Jack Nicklaus At 1972 U.s. Open Golf Tournament
The US Open is known as one of the most prestigious tournament in men's golf. The tournament is considered to be one of the 4 major tournaments along with the British Open, Masters, and PGA Championship.
This would be a notable major tournament for many reasons. One of the reasons was that it was the first time that the US Open was ever played at Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach is one of the most famous names in golf when it comes to courses. Many players speak fondly of Pebble Beach, including the famous Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus is rumored to have said that if he had to choose one place to play his last round of golf that he would play it at Pebble Beach.
With Nicklaus having such a fondness towards Pebble Beach it was fitting that he would be very much in the race to win the tournament in its premier at the US Open. Another significant memory would be that this would be the last major championships that Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer would place each other head to head.
Palmer and Nicklaus went into the final round within two strokes of each other. Nicklaus was in the lead by 2 strokes, but many people were excited ...
... as these were the top two players in the world. Nicklaus managed to pull out a great performance in the final round and while it seemed like everyone around him was putting up poor rounds, he managed to beat all of his competition. There was not a single player that finished in the top 17 players that managed to finish with a better score than Nicklaus in the final round. His final round score was a 74 and was actually the worst score of his four rounds of play.
Nicklaus would ultimately walk away from the tournament with a victory, scoring 3 strokes lower than any other player in the field. He won 30 thousand dollars for his victory at Pebble Beach.
The runner-up at the tournament was Bruce Crampton. Crampton beat out Arnold Palmer by one stroke, finishing with a 293 through the tournament. He won 15 thousand dollars for his play at Pebble Beach. Crampton was one of just 2 players in the top 10 that were not born in the United States of America. Chi Chi Rodriguez was the other. He finished in 9th place and was born in Puerto Rico.
Palmer beat out Homero Blancas and Lee Trevino to take 3rd place in the tournament. His final score of 294 was one stroke lower than the 295 that Blancas and Trevino shot to tie for 4th place in the tournament. Third place warranted a prize of 10 thousand dollars, while 4th place brought home 7500 dollars each.
The highest placing amateur in the tournament was Jim Simons. Simons was actually the 18th best player in the tournament and was one of the few players that finished the final round with a better score than Nicklaus. Another notable amateur in the tournament was Tom Kite. Kite finished one stroke behind Simons and was on his way to a stellar career.
