Chiropractic adjustment (also called chiropractic spinal manipulation or spinal adjustment) is a technique that is commonly used for chiropractic back pain treatment and treatment of other musculo-skeletal conditions. Chiropractic adjustment involves moving a joint beyond its usual range of motion, but not beyond the range of motion the joint is designed to move. The goal is to increase the range and quality of motion in the area being treated and to aid in restoring health. Chiropractic adjustment is often used for chiropractic back pain or neck pain relief.

Chiropractic adjustment techniques are practiced widely in Australia, including in most chiropractor Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane clinics.

How a chiropractic adjustment is performed

Depending on the reason for your visit, your chiropractor may make adjustments to joints in your back or neck or some other part of your body, such as your shoulder.
At your initial visit, your chiropractor ...
... will:

Ask questions about your health history
Perform a physical exam, particularly of your spine
Your chiropractor may also recommend other examinations or tests, such as an X-ray.
Based on these initial exams, your chiropractor will put together a treatment plan to suit your needs and treatment goals.

During the Chiropractic Back or Neck Adjustment

During a typical chiropractic back pain or neck adjustment, your chiropractor places you in specific positions to treat affected areas. Often, you're positioned lying face down on a specially designed, padded chiropractic table. The chiropractor uses his or her hands to apply a controlled, sudden force to a joint, pushing it beyond its usual range of motion. Sometimes an instrument can be used to perform the adjustment rather than the chiropractor's hands.

Other forms of adjustment may involve your chiropractor positioning you on your side to perform the adjustment, "release work", where your chiropractor applies gentle pressure using the fingertips to separate the vertebrae or lying on a special table with sections that drop down. With the latter method, the chiropractor applies a quick thrust at the same time the table section drops. The dropping of the table allows for a lighter adjustment without the twisting positions that can accompany other techniques.

Most of the variations of chiropractic adjustment techniques are practised throughout Australia including in chiropractor Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane clinics.

"Popping or Cracking Sounds"

You often will hear a popping or cracking noise during chiropractic adjustment as the joint is manipulated. However, chiropractors generally note that the audible pop doesn't need to occur for a successful manipulation.

Research shows that the popping or cracking sound is from small pockets of air or bubbles found in the tissue fluid surrounding a joint capsule. When the joint tissues are stretched during a chiropractic adjustment, the pockets of air 'pop' creating a cracking sound.
