What's one of the most difficult parts about surfing? If you ask most surfers, it's probably paddling out into a wave, and then making the quick transition from being prone on the board to standing up. If you don't do it fast enough, you'll end up missing the best part of the wave. If you're not that agile, it's probably in your best interest to buy stand up paddle boards. These surfboards have traction pads to keep you on your feet, and standing up to paddle instead of sitting down provides the added benefit of getting a workout while you surf.

Stand up paddle boards are the next evolution in surfing because they get rid of the prone paddling aspect of surfing. However, making the quick switch from laying to standing as the wave arrives can be extremely challenging, especially for beginners. These boards make it easier to get into the wave and jumpstart your surfing experience by keeping you upright the whole time. You can transition in and out of waves faster, and the entire experience can be more enjoyable.

Furthermore, you get to work your arms while you paddle upright. It's very similar to the workout your ...
... arms get from paddling a boat with oars rather than relying on a motor to move you along. Stand up paddle boards use the same principle, so while you're having fun with your feet, your arms will be burning! Don't worry, it's a good burn. You'll be able to rest your arms while you surf, but get ready to start paddling once the wave is gone. It's this unique combination of fun and exercise that makes the paddle board so popular.

These boards are about as long as regular longboards, so they'd be an appropriate gift for the beginning surfer in your life. Stand up paddle boards need paddles, of course, so be sure to buy a couple of extra paddles. These paddles usually cost around $200, but they're made of sturdy material so they won't bend or break on you. The general rule of thumb is to take your height and add 8 inches in order to get the right height for the paddle. You don't want a paddle that is too short, because it may not be able to move you along; however, a paddle that is too long may slow you down.
