One of America's must-see destinations, New Orleans, Louisiana is known for its music, architecture, culture, and festivals. After the damage of Hurricane Katrina, this port city continues on, welcoming tourists with its hospitality. Fine cuisine, myriad activities, and landmark structures guarantee that New Orleans offers something for everyone. The traveler can choose from many accommodations, but for those interested in experiencing both luxury and history, the following five hotels will make the visit a memorable one.

The Bienville House, at 320 Decatur Street, started as a grain warehouse, and then was transformed into a hotel in 1835. The building later served as a boardinghouse and rental property before being restored to its classic stateliness by the current owners. Bienville House has 83 rooms (a number have wrought-iron balconies), and a lovely courtyard pool. Amenities include continental breakfast, WiFi, four poster beds, 300-count sheets, and in-room safes.

The elegant Dauphine Orleans, located in the famous French Quarter, at 415 Dauphine Street, has a colorful history, including the hotel's bar, ...
... which was once a bordello. Some of the suites date back to 1834 and housed famous guests such as John James Audubon. Rooms have complimentary Internet and antique furnishings; suites offer Jacuzzis and marble bathrooms. Guests also have access to an outdoor salt-water pool.

Lafayette Hotel, built in 1916, is located at 600 St. Charles Ave in the Historical Arts and Warehouse district. This quaint, friendly accommodation overlooks Lafayette Square, and has charming details such as wrought-iron balconies, French doors, and botanical prints. The 44 rooms and suites have amenities such as marble baths, French milled soaps, cotton Turkish robes, and designer fabrics. Access to the St Charles street car line gives visitors an easy way to see other areas of the city.

Established in 1886, the famous Hotel Monteleone is known for its opulent decor, grandfather clock, and rotating carousel bar. Past guests include literary greats William Faulkner and Eudora Welty. The lobby's marble floors and chandeliers add to the glamour. Guests can access the rooftop pool, fitness room, spa, and two restaurants. The 600 rooms and 55 suites are magnificently furnished, with amenities such as flat-screen TVs, marble bathrooms, and Jacuzzis (in suites). This hotel is located at 214 Royal Street, in the French Quarter.

Built on the site of a former plantation home, Le Pavillon began as a hotel in 1905, and its history includes an underground tunnel on the property, possibly used during Prohibition. The white 10-story building displays exterior columns and two enormous statues at the entrance. Paintings and crystal chandeliers decorate the spectacular lobby. Rooms offer plush linens, mini bars, and WiFi; select themed suites have fireplaces and canopy beds. Located at 833 Poydras Street in downtown New Orleans, the Le Pavillon also has a rooftop pool and fitness center.
