Hypothesis
H1: If death penalty is supposed to deter capital offences, then abolishing death penalty will increase the number of capital offenders
H0: If death penalty is supposed to deter capital offenses, then abolishing death penalty will decrease capital offenders
Operationalization
The above hypothesis is based on the assumption that death penalty is geared towards deterring the society from committing capital crimes. By learning from the punishment other have received, it is expected that others will refrain from committing offenses that attract such punishment. Therefore, the study will established whether there is direct relationship between death penalty and rate of capital offense. If death penalty reduces capital offense, then abolishing death penalty would result to increased number of capital offenses.
In this case, the independent variable, or variable that is manipulated is death penalty (Everitt, 2002). The study is testing the relationship between death penalty and number of capital offenses and therefore manipulating death penalty by abolishing it, would show whether it deters ...
... capital offense or not. To operationalize this variable, the study will look at the countries that have abolished death penalty and those that have not abolished. In this case, abolition of death penalty will not consider the year since when the last execution was carried out but it will consider legal abolition of death penalty (Mellenbergh, 2008).
The dependant variable, a variable that will be observed is the number of capital offenses (Mellenbergh, 2008). The number of capital offenses recorded after the death penalty has been abolished would indicate whether abolishing death penalty reduces or increases number of capital offense. In this study, number of capital offense considered will include all those offense which previously attracted death penalty in a given country before legal abolition was carried out.
