A traditional way of constructing a building using materials like brick, stone, concrete block, and mortar is called Masonry. Mortar is an adhesive that is used for sticking the bricks, which is made from lime or pulverized clay mixed with very fine sand and water. For the durability of the structure, it is very necessary that the quality of mortar should be of a top grade. Besides, the workmanship and pattern in which the unit is assembled plays an important role in the durability of a building. Generally, masonry means construction with stone.

To give a castle look to the house, many people prefer masonry construction over painted and plastered finished building. Owing to its endurance to different weathers and unforeseen calamities, the majority of people are still stick to it in spite of modern developments in architecture. This type of house is good at storing thermal mass of the building, which makes it ideal for winter and summer seasons. It stores the heat in the winter and keeps rooms cozy, where as it keeps rooms cool in extreme summer season. ...

This type of construction can be used for many places like fireplaces, entrances, boundaries, gardens and so on. A house surrounded with stonewall gives an old time look to the house. In addition to that, stoned driveway and gardens increase the appearance of the house manifolds. There are two types of stone construction one is made using mortar, and another is dry. Though it needs low maintenance and less repairing, yet restoration is needed after a long duration, which helps it to stay for long. Sometimes, due to frost damage the wall surfaces are degraded in extreme weather condition. One of the biggest drawbacks of it is high cost of both material and labor. The brick and stones for construction can be very heavy and to deliver it at construction site can cost one's pocket hugely.

There is a gamut of bricks and stones available for the stone construction that is marble, granite, limestone, travertine, and many more. These stones are available in different colors, sizes cut, and finishings. While building with stone, you need to consider what type of stone you require, depending on your personal preference and architecture of the house as every stone has unique of texture and color.
