John Cappelletti is a former running back from the National Football League. Cappelleti was born on the 9th of August in 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Pennsylvania and attended college at Penn State where he would start his college football career.

Cappelletti had just two years of play as a running back at Penn State, but in his short career he made a big statement with his play on the field. In his first year he rushed for more than 1100 yards and ran into the end zone for 12 touchdowns. While his first year was very successful, it was nothing compared to his second year playing at Penn State.

Cappelletti dominated his competition throughout the season in his senior year and rushed for more than 1500 yards over the course of the season. Not only did he rush for 1500 yards, but he also managed to score 17 touchdowns on the season. His performance brought him a number of awards after the season. The awards include the Maxwell Award, College Football Player of the Year award, Walter Camp Award and the coveted Heisman Trophy.

When Cappelletti won the Heisman Trophy he gave a speech that ...
... would become one of the most special moments in the history of sports. In his speech he dedicated his award to his brother Joey. Joey was dying of childhood leukemia. Joey passed away a couple of years later on April 8, 1976.

Cappelletti's tremendous success in college brought a lot of interest to professional teams and he was drafted in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Rams took Cappelletti with the 11th pick in the draft.

Unfortunately, Cappelletti never panned out to be the same type of runner that we has in as a player in college. While in college he averaged over 5 yards per carry. While in the NFL he never had a season that he carried the ball a significant amount of times where he averaged at least 4 yards per carry. His best season in terms of yardage came in his 3rd season when he played as a fullback. He ran for nearly 700 yards on 3.9 yards per carry. He also caught 30 passes for 300 yards in that season.

Over the course of his career Cappelletti rushed for 2951 yards at 3.6 yards per carry. He had 24 rushing touchdowns and 4 receiving touchdowns to go along with 1233 receiving yards.

Cappelletti played in the NFL from 1974-1983, but the greatest successes in his football career came while still in college. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993. Joe Paterno once said that Cappelletti was better than any football player that he had ever coached.

Cappelletti finished his career in San Diego, California but now lives in Laguna Nigel, California and is married with 4 sons. His wife's name is Bety and she is coincidentally the daughter of another former Heisman Trophy winner named Alan Ameche.
