I have seen and studied a flag or two in my life, including the national flag of Luxembourg. Like other flags of Europe, this particular is considered a tricolor type flag, meaning it displays three bands horizontally in three colors. The colors red, white and blue are shown on two different flag proportions, 1:2 and 3:5. This flag is attached to flag poles of all kinds throughout the territory of Luxembourg and other places throughout Europe.

The country of Luxembourg is considered a land-locked country. Meaning, it is "locked in" by other countries, which are Belgium (to the west), France (to the south) and Germany (to the east). Referred to as officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, its population counts about 0.5 million inhabitants covering an area of about 1000 square miles.

Interestingly, the so called "red lion" ensign or flag, or banner, is the official ensign used on vessels that "sail" on behalf of Luxembourg. The flag itself is flown as an ensign to avoid the possibility of confusion. Confusion, that is between the national flag of Luxembourg and the one flown from flagpoles in the Netherlands. The ...
... ration maintained for this ensign is five to seven.

Interestingly, the colors that are displayed on the Luxembourg flag from flag poles in modern times as well as the past, are said to tie into various other traditional colors that were used by leaders of the past, including counts and dukes. Even though the flag has been displayed for nearly 200 years, it was not till the 1970-s that it was officially adopted by law. Like the United States of America, and other flags of Europe, this flag's specifics are regulated by law.

Flags and banners of all kinds, including school banners, are used for means of identification throughout the world. Flags are commonly flown from aluminum and steel flagpoles, including poles aboard vessels of all types. Common materials used for the manufacturing of banners and flags are nylon and polyester.
