Top Searches In 2010

The results are in, and they’re pretty different. The three main search engines have compiled their top searches in 2010 and each engine seems to have come up with something totally different.
Google has created a Google Zeigeist feature that compiled the year’s fastest growing searches. It’s broken down into several categories, including fastest rising food, electronics, sports, entertainment, news and more. Each of these categories can also be viewed as a Global search, or broken down by country, like the U.S. So, what was the break down for the fastest rising searches worldwide?
1. The number one spot was occupied by Chatroulette. It’s a video chat room, similar to AOL’s chat rooms of the 90s, except with web cams. The site saw some controversy this year after being shut down and reopened at least once.
2. Number two went to Apple’s iPad. Like all things Apple, the release of the new tablet technology created quite a stir.
3. Number three was Justin Beiber, a teen ...
... singing sensation that’s climbing the music charts, as well as search engines.
4. Number four was Nicki Minaj, another rising singer.
5. Number five was Friv, a provider of free online games.
Yahoo
Yahoo’s list had some totally different items at the top. According to the article featuring the list, for the last ten years, the number one spot on their list has been occupied by some form of entertainer, a TV show like “American Idol†or a celebrity like Brittany Spears. However this year, for the first time ever the number one spot was occupied by a news event. Here’s their list.
1. BP Oil Spill: After taking 86 days to stop the oil from gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, this disaster surged to the number one spot.
2. World Cup: People took crash courses in soccer and followed their favorite teams online, taking this sporting event to the number two slot.
3. Miley Cyrus: 2010 marked a banner year for the teen. She taped the end of her Disney show “Hannah Montana,†starred in a Nicholas Sparks film, and made the cover of Harper’s Bazaar.
4. Kim Kardashian: The reality diva was deemed America’s reality royalty this year, and after turning down a diamond encrusted birthday cake, she was even dubbed humanitarian.
5. Lady Gaga: Lady Gaga is consistently gaining in popularity, and although 2010 didn’t hold as many hits as 2009 did, it didn’t stop people from looking her up.
Bing
Bing’s list also included some celebrities.
1. Kim Kardashian dominated Bing’s list of top search terms.
2. Sandra Bullock was number two, after winning an academy award, adopting a son and getting divorced in 2010.
3. Tiger Woods returned to the PGA tour in 2010, and was deemed the sports story of the year by the Associated Press. However, his personal life remained in upheaval, which kept searchers coming back for more.
4. Lady Gaga climbed one spot for Bing searchers over the Yahoo list, coming in at number four.
5. Barack Obama has also had a rough year with approval ratings taking a major dip after rulings on health care and taxes, and his name ranked fifth on Bing’s list as people searched for information on his policies and what he was planning next for the country.
There you have it. The top searches of 2010 as they appeared from the three top search engines.
