Leisurely Norfolk Broads
The Norfolk Broads covers an area of over 117 square miles and has a total of 120 miles of waterways which can be explored by boat. In the current economic climate, increasing numbers of Britons are deciding to stay at home for holidays rather than head to European destinations, and a boating holiday on the Broads is an option to suit the whole family.
Looking at a Norfolk broads map it becomes clear that although the Broads are mainly in Norfolk, the area extends south into the neighbouring county of Suffolk as well. Seven main rivers form the backbone of the Broads, along with the many lakes and smaller pools which form the broads themselves. 2 million visitors enjoy the unique experience that the Broads has to offer every year, but in such a wide area there is plenty of space for everyone and the area never feels particularly crowded, especially off the beaten track. For wildlife lovers the Norfolk Broads boasts some of the best wetland habitats in the UK, with many species of birds and plants not found anywhere else in the country.
Most people ...
... holidaying on the Broads do so under their own steam and there are several companies offering to hire out all sizes of boats for a week or more. Most boats come with all the home comforts including flushing toilet, full cooking facilities and a shower and range from small 2 berth boats to much larger craft sleeping up to 12. All types of boats are available, from ultra modern cruisers to the more traditional longboats or barges. Boats are full equipped with everything you need, including life jackets for all members of the party. One of the best things about the Broads for people new to sailing is that there are no tricky locks to navigate through.
As you meander around the Broads taking in the scenery and the wildlife, you will come across small villages and settlements. All have a post where you can moor the boat for a short while and get out exploring on foot. Many riverside pubs have mooring spots so you can stop for food or a well earned drink after a long day on the water. If mooring overnight, there may be a small charge of around £5 per night per boat.
Many of the major towns and cities in Norfolk such as Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft are accessible by boat and visits to one or all of them can be built into a boating holiday in the area. Before you set off on your boating journey it is wise to spend an hour or so with a good Norfolk Broads map to plan which areas you want to visit and work out a rough itinerary for your holiday. Be realistic about how much travelling you are prepared to do, and build in some time for relaxing or stopping longer in one place if it should turn out to be interesting. The Norfolk Broads are one of England's most unique areas and offer attractions to all who visit.
