Texas Offers $8 Million In Rebates For Replacing Energy Star® Appliances

There are now a few more good reasons to consider replacing or updating your heating and cooling system. In addition to increasing efficiency and lowering utility costs, state and federal programs are promoting energy incentives. For Austin heating customers, Texas offers $8 million in rebates, plus federal tax credits are available for replacing with Energy Star® units.

Federal Tax Credits

Federal tax credits for updating and replacing units have been offered now for several years. After much fanfare, the Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010 was signed into law just this past year. Depending on the size of the unit, customers can still receive tax rebates up to $600 per unit. The goal of the program is to promote awareness of ENERGY STAR® appliances and decrease energy consumption by encouraging appliance replacement. The new Texas Appliance Mail-in Rebate Program is a traditional mail-in rebate program and consumers do not reserve funding for an appliance rebate. If you live in Austin, heating rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds are distributed.

Qualifying For Rebates and Credits

Rebates and credits are available for Austin heating and cooling customers to install central air conditioning with 15 SEER and 12.0 EER rating. Heat pumps will require a 15 SEER, 12.0 EER and HSPF of 8.2 rating. You will need to purchase a qualifying ENERGY STAR® unit from an Austin heating and cooling retailer or contractor and retain your receipt.

After installing the new, qualifying heating and air conditioning unit at your valid Texas residential address, you will need to properly dispose of or recycle the old appliance of the same type that is being replaced. Finally, you will need to completely fill out and mail a rebate application form including the appliance disposal or recycling information.
