Upcoming movie, The Illusionist, is produced from a 1950's script by Jacque Tati, well-known French comedian, and fits in perfectly with Sylvain Chomet's meticulous style of animation. The Illusionist will be admired by all of those who are fans of old style animation and will probably build up the same sort of cult following that Triplets did.
Chomet has a style and humor that fits in well with Tati's style, as well as the way he produces caricatures.
The Illusionist is set in the early 1950's and tells the story of a magician, named Tatischeff, who is growing older. He is touring Scotland with his magic show. After a bad show in the Hebrides, he goes to Edinburgh, taking a runaway young girl with him who he has met on the road and befriended.
Although Tatischeff has a hard time making a living, he and the young girl become close friends and form a wonderful platonic couple. Of course, the audience knows that it's not going to last.
Both Chomet and Tati's characters are defined by looks and actions rather than by words. There is very little dialogue. Tatischeff speaks French, his young friend speaks ...
... Gaelic and there is the occasional accent from elsewhere in the new movie. The audience will learn the story through what happens and through gestures.
The new movie release is also a poem of love to Scotland as well as to Tati and his comedy. Chomet makes Scotland look as if it's part of a dream: all clothed in radiant light.
In one movie clip Tatischeff goes into an Edinburgh movie house. There's a very obvious poster for the movie The Triplets of Belleville on the wall. When the magician goes into the theater, he sees himself on the stage as the audience sees the real Tati playing his own alter ego, Monsieur Hulot in the 1958 film Mon oncle.
