Fire causes a heavy damage to property and even lots of death of people. People are becoming more concern when it comes to their safety.

Fire prevention is very crucial job. So instead of thinking of prevention of fire first, proper safety measures should be taken. Fire can be caused due to many reasons like re-ignition of cigarettes, improper kitchen cooking, improper storage of hazardous materials, improper use of candles, matches, lighters, Unsafe electrical conditions, careless use of heating devices like iron, water heater, etc, and so on.

Many have fire places but not everyone has fire dampers. Not many know about the benefits given by fire dampers so most are ignorant about the necessity of having one.

Fire & Smoke Dampers are passive fire protection products designed to close when temperature rise to prevent spread of fire or smoke inside the ductwork. A Fire Damper is mainly fitted inside or at the top of the chimney. They are typically curtain style that will shut down when the fusible link melts.

Fire Dampers are mainly used to maintain the rating required of fire rate barriers such ...
... as walls, partitions, floors when they are penetrated by the ductwork. So whenever there is a rise in temperature, it will close and prevent the spread of flame thru the barrier.

There are few precautions that should be taken care of while using Fire & smoke Dampers so it is best to have installed it professionally. Proper inspection should be done of Fire Damper to make sure of any problems occurring. Every Damper must be inspected once in one year after its installation and then the frequency of inspection should be reduced gradually. Moreover, the National Fire Protection Association and other authorities have decided Life Safety Code which states that fire and smoke Dampers shall require inspection and testing one year after its installation.

The following things should be taken care of at the time of inspection -

1. Fusible links should be removed before testing to ensure full closure and lock in place if equipped. If fusible link is damaged then it should be replaced with the link of same size, temperature and load rating.

2. The latch should be checked and if necessary the moving parts should be lubricated.

3. There should not be rust, damaged frames or blades, misalignment, defective parts, bent tracks at the time of inspection done.

4. Inspection done should be documented consisting place of inspection done, date of inspection, inspector details, damper identification number, type of damper, fusible link status and deficiencies.

5. The Damper must not be blocked from closure. The Damper must be cycled by removing the source of power to verify closure.

6. The Damper track should be cleaned properly and lubricated to verify proper sealing of the Damper.
