There is a serious epidemic surfacing with teenagers today. Oxycontin has become a popular drug choice for teenagers even after reports of deaths due to overdosing. Many Hollywood celebrities have confessed to being hooked on this drug and have entered rehab. Even with all the information about the dangers of misusing this prescription, many kids are still stealing it from their parent's medicine cabinets. There is really no physical need for the pain pills by many people and they are just used to alter their states of mind.

Oxycontin is a very powerful pain reliever that is usually prescribed for people who have broken bones, severe back injuries, pain from cancer and other painful injuries or conditions. This drug is an opiate like heroin or morphine and is very addictive. If you have ever been prescribed this drug, you may have needed to have medical help with weaning yourself from it. Yet, it is also sought by those with no injuries or physical disabilities.

Many times, overdosing on this prescription is due to using it improperly. This drug is time released so that the user can get longer lasting pain relief. ...
... Those who are highly addicted to it or those who are seeking a quick high will crush up the pills before they take them. This causes all of the chemicals to be released in the body at one time. This can be deadly as that large of a dosage can cause irreversible respiratory damage and even death. This is why Oxycontin is considered one of the most dangerous drugs today. Even though you have to have a prescription to use it, it doesn't seem like it is very difficult to obtain.

Due to the growing popularity of this medication, parents are urged to be sure it is secured away from other family members or visitors to the home. Sometimes kids try to win popularity by pleasing friends and raiding someone's parents' medicine cabinet is a request made in both high school and college. Prescription medications are serious and pain pills should not be used for a quick high or kept without security in these times.
