A very hot weekend and my usual Sunday rant has slipped over to Monday because of a huge weekend of selling Real Estate.
In the afternoon of yesterday's heat, with the sunlight like a sharp arrow piercing through the palms of our back garden over the pool, my eldest child (6years old) is playing. This is what I discovered in observation:
She was running around with giggles of excitement trying to catch this butterfly. Around and round she danced in the afternoon heat stopping only occasionally with cheeks red as raspberries and the mixed look of humor, passion and frustration lighting her face up like a Christmas tree. It was an entertaining sight. I asked her what she thought the best way to catch the butterfly was. She asked me if we have a net. Maybe a net would catch it. Eventually, spent, with beads of sweat dripping off her forehead and the look of defeat written all over her face, she gave up on the chase and sat down on the grass with a smile on her face and said Daddy, I don't think the butterfly wants to be caught.
Before I had a chance to respond, and almost like a good sense of humor with God's ...
... nature, the butterfly landed squarely on her shoulder. At this stage my daughter remained still, very still. With total amazement she had caught her butterfly. A smile broadened her face and she very gently reached up her hand and with the tip of her finger she felt the butterfly sit on her hand. She slowly brought the butterfly down in front of her. Still surprised and over whelmed with her result, she described in vivid detail, the colors of this butterfly and its features. It was a moment in time.
How true is this story of representing life itself?
Let me explain.
Are you madly trying to chase something that you desire so strongly but it constantly appears to be out of your grasps, the perfect job, business taking off, a partner, a better relationship with your teenage children, better marriage, HOUSE SOLD, the list goes on? Sometimes in life, especially through a storm, it is not until we are in the eye of that cyclone that we realize what we need to do and the very thing we were chasing so madly presents itself on a silver platter virtually with no effort at all. Like the butterfly that in my daughters stillness, landing on her shoulder. She could see its colors, appreciate its beauty and realize that maybe the hard work and chasing was part of the solution, but it was the rest, the stillness, the peaceful resolution that brought about the result she was after.
Are you going through a storm right know, are you madly chasing, with defeat building in your heart the Butterfly of Life. I encourage you, like I learned from my daughter this very week to take time out, without distraction, without any thoughts, plans or chatter in your mind and rest for at least half an hour by yourself. During that time make a commitment to yourself that you are not going to chase the very thing you are chasing for a small amount of time. You are going to resign yourself and convince yourself that there are other things to focus on. Because when you have a hammer in your hand Everything looks like a nail. When you have a major issue in your life, everything looks like a problem.
