How To Make Your Home Eco-friendly

If like me you would like to live in a new eco-friendly house but it isn't feasible just yet, then there are ways we can improve our living, save us money, and live in a more eco-friendly way.
Unfortunately most of us live in pre-war homes which were built for people of that time, where energy wasn't used in the large scale that it is today. Homes were draughty and not built to conserve energy, but with a little effort we can all make improvements that will make our homes more energy efficient and save money on bills, too.
You should start will small steps like making sure you turn lights and appliances off when you are not using them. Leaving televisions on standby waste energy, so if you're not using them, turn them off. Computer consoles get left on and this is costing you so turn them off. It is only a switch let's face it! When you brush your teeth, don't leave the tap running, only turn it one when you want to clean your brush. Recycle everything. There is no excuse for this now with curb side collections every fortnight.
With a small outlay you can buy energy efficient light ...
... bulbs. They have progressed since they first came out and they are much brighter, and take less time to get bright. Older toilets use lots of water so don't flush as often, or if you can't bare that, get a new eco friendly toilet.
Insulation in the loft will keep your heat in your home. Your paying for your heat, so letting some rise out through your walls loft is just madness. Without loft insulation you are effectively throwing your heat away. Heating bills are the most expensive in years so it makes sense to get your loft insulated.
Older boilers are not efficient and will cost far more to run than new condensing boilers. Having a new boiler is probably the best thing you can do that will save your pocket in the long run. Combi boilers only heat water when a tap is turned on, and if it's a condensing boiler it will reuse wasted energy (the steam from the flue/chimney) and turn that back into heat for your radiators. New condensing boilers can save you around £210 in fuel costs every year.
Cost shouldn't be an issue as there are plenty of grants available. The government has tough targets to reach has lots of incentives. Many boiler insulation companies offer discounts of reasonable finance for replacing boilers or switching fuels. Whatever you do, the sooner you do it the sooner you will start seeing a saving in your bills.
