Varanasi or Banaras is a famous city in India whose fame is attributed to its well preserved and well practiced customs and traditions. The city boasts of some of the best collection of fabrics including silk sarees which come in rare and exotic designs for the wearer. They are well known for their wedding sarees and Ralph Fitch described this city as one of the most prominent and flourishing cotton industry. The Mughal reign and their rich culture gave rise to a new era of weaving gold and silver threads into the exotically designed Banrasi saree.

Recently, the famous Kashmir's 'Pashmina', Banarsi silk fabrics, Darjeeling Tea, Tirupati laddu, Pochampalli and Malihabadi Dussehri mangoes of Uttar Pradesh received their rights of Geographical Indication or GI. This GI indicator is a rank assigned to the products from a certain geographical region and makes the product enjoy some rare privileges and qualities. banarasi saree has got their acknowledgement as 'Banaras Brocades and Sarees' and the president of the Human Welfare Association (HWA)-Rajni Kant approved of the GI rank ...
... assigned to the banarsi sarees. Even the founder member of the Eastern UP Exporters Association (EUPEA) highly commended the GI status especially in this present world of globalization.

Around eight banarsi products related organizations including the Banarsi Bunkar Samiti are looking forward to achieve their rights for the Banarsi products. Although these sarees are really facing some very toughest competitions including those from the cities of Surat, Bhagalpur and Bangalore; nevertheless the GI rank will ensure replication and fake duplications of this product by other competitors while also benefitting many exporters, consumers, weavers and approximately 12 lakh individuals involved indirectly or directly into this business. These sarees are woven in fabulous and intricate patterns while speaking volumes about a great Indian taste of art and culture. banarasi sarees is really the most yearned fabrics with their designs largely inspired from the remarkable Mughal culture.

The GI status characterizes these banarsi products as textile goods, silk embroidery, silk sari and silk brocades. GI makes fake replication of these sarees as impossible as no sari manufactured outside Uttar Pradesh can be sold with a label as Banarsi sari. Hence, authenticity and originality is guaranteed right away. The six districts of Uttar Pradesh which are given this highly commendable status are Bhadohi, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Chandauli and Azamgarh. There is a wide variety among these Banarsi sarees namely as Shattir, Georgette, Pure silk and Organza (Kora) equipped with zari. Their categories include Cutwork, Tanchoi, Butidar, Vaskat, Jangla and Tissu. They are a must wear on the finest occasions like weddings by the Indian women and the brides deem their dowries as incomplete without this exotic and beautiful Banarsi saree.
