As any SEO consultant will tell you, creating a pretty website isn't the key to attracting visitors, but it is still important. You want to attract people with a design that is both visually appealing and search engine friendly. Here are four things you need to keep in mind.

1. Cues
If your website is full of boring, technical data, it's not going to appeal to a lot of people. Sure, some may like a website that gets right to the point and has zero personality, but many people will let their attention wander to a website that looks good. There are many cues you can use to accomplish this eye-grabbing characteristic. They include:
Bold Headlines
Pictures
Bullet points

Using various fonts and font sizes
Not going overboard on anything
On the other hand, you also need to grab a search engine's attention. This can be done through:
Unique templates
The right amount of content
Using the right amount of links on your page
Using content that is crawl-friendly (no flash or java script)

There are ways to use both to accomplish your goals, including using images to link pages, blogs located in sub folders, using no follow tags, removing duplicate content, and making sure you are smart about using your internal links.

2. The order in which you put your information can have an impact on your website, as well. Most websites require users to scroll (usually up and down). You want to have your most important information right there above the line where scrolling begins. Many people do not bother to scroll when they can't find the right information.

3. It doesn't take an SEO expert to realize linking is one of the most important parts of marketing online. You need internal links on your website, as well as outbound links from other websites. The way these links are structured and the way they flow are important. Do not have hundreds of links that will send people away from your website, especially on your landing pages.

Remember, hiring an SEO consultant doesn't mean you are giving up your good-looking website. A website can be both search engine friendly and appealing to the eyes. It's finding the right medium and making the two seem seamless that will help your business - and your page - rank grow!
