Novox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid class that is used to treat pain associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. The drug is also indicated for control of post operative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgery in dogs. However, its use should only be under prescription by a veterinarian.
The recommended dose for dogs is 2mg/lb (4.4mg/kg) of body weight daily for control of inflammation. For post operative pain, Novox should be administered two hours before surgery. The drug has few side effects which include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or tarry stools, increased thirst and urination, lethargy, and seizures or behavioral changes. Some animals are allergic to the medication and symptoms include swelling, hives and rash. Studies however show that the drug is generally well tolerated in dogs.
In rare conditions the drug should not be used in animals allergic to Novox or other NSIADS. It should not be used for animals with bleeding problems such as stomach ulcers. Pregnant or nursing animals should not be treated with the drug. Dogs with heart failure, ...
... liver or kidney failure should also not be treated with the drug. It is important for the pet owner to tell the veterinarian what other medications a dog is taking to avoid harmful drug interactions. This drug should not be given to cats.
The mechanism of action for Novox, like for other NSAIDs, is believed to be associated with the inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity. Two unique cyclooxygenases have been described in mammals and are abbreviated as COX-1 and COX-2. Inhibition of COX-2 provides anti-inflammatory activity which results from administrating Novox and other NSAIDs. The drug is rapidly absorbed almost completely and 95% of Novox is available in the plasma for biochemical activity. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-3 hours of administration of 1, 5, 25 mg/kg of drugs.
Novox is eliminated from the body of the pet primarily by biotransformation in the liver followed by rapid excretion of the resulting metabolites through urine. The drug has a half life of 8 to 12 hours in the body of the pet meaning that administration two times a day will be effective in controlling of pain. The relative ease of administration, few side effects in most pets, and high efficacy, has made Novox the number one drug of choice in pain management for most dog owners. Since its approval by the FDA its use has rapidly increased across America.
Novox medications should be stored away from the reach of children and pets and should be away from direct heat and moisture. It is important for pet owners to read and understand the instructions on the cover of the medication before administration. In case of contraindications use of the drug should be stopped and a veterinarian consulted.
