If you love working in the medical field but do not want to be a doctor or a nurse, you may wonder whether there are other jobs out there that would be suitable for you. Lab jobs and occupational therapy jobs require special education. They are two alternatives that allow you to work in the health industry but which are not nursing or physician positions. There are many different variations of lab jobs and occupational therapy jobs. Here is more information on the two potential job fields:

One thing you may want to consider when looking at lab jobs is whether you are interested in working with blood and other bodily fluids or if you are interested in more theoretical lab jobs. This will tell you whether or not you need to concentrate your education and training on biology or chemistry. Some lab jobs include working in a blood bank, in hematology or even in toxicology. Some lab jobs may also include working with law enforcement agencies and can be fun and exciting as well. If you are more interested in a managerial position, you may want to look at lab jobs that are geared in this direction.

A good job board will ...
... tell you what kind of certification that you need in order to have a chance at the position you are interested in. Some may require a more general education, a strong work background, specific courses or licensing. You may also want to find out how much work experience you would need for senior level positions and what the pay scale is. Then you can use this information to decide which will work best for your needs and interests.

If you like the idea of working with patients but do not want to work as a doctor or nurse, you may be more interested in occupational therapy jobs rather than working in a lab. Occupational therapists may work with a specific part of the population and treat diseases and injuries that are more common to that portion of the population. A good example of this would be geriatric occupational therapist jobs that may be found in hospitals or nursing homes. They would work with the elderly and help them to heal from falls or other accidents and regain range of motion, strength and independence. Other occupational therapy jobs may be located in a hospital and be aimed at helping hospitalized patients breathe better, perform exercises while they are confined to a bed, or begin the recovery practice after injury, surgery or illness.

Occupational therapists do require specialized training and certification before they are able to work in their field. You may want to look at opportunities for occupational therapy jobs to find out what specific qualifications they are looking for and then check educational institutions to determine where you will be able to get the education and training you will need.
