Historically people did not like fluorescent lights in the home because they were very unattractive in the long rectangular light fixture. Technology has helped developed more stylish fluorescent light fixtures which has encouraged the use of these lights. Now that more contemporary and modern fixtures are available, more home owners are implementing fluorescent light fixtures in the home.

One popular use of fluorescent lighting is used in over the cabinet lighting. Kitchen cabinets are often wired to include lighting on the top of cabinets. These lights reflect a warm glow from the cabinets to the ceiling which helps make a home more welcoming and cozy. This is a perfect spot to use fluorescent lighting because these lights are normally kept on for the majority of the evening. This is not to be confused with accent lighting as this type of lighting focuses light on a particular object, such as an art sculpture. This lighting draws attention to that specific ornamental piece. To light up a room, such as a library or den which needs good lighting, fluorescent lighting is ideal.

These are the most common uses of fluorescent lighting that can be found within a home. Technological advances are creating more opportunities to use fluorescent lighting to help home owners take advantage of the energy efficiency it provides.
