VPS is a great new hosting option available for website owners and developers today. There are two main choices available in virtual private servers today- windows and Linux. Both of these options are used extensively since they both offer good features. However, they have their own pros and cons and depending on your business requirements you can select one that suits your needs well. Linux is a free open source system while windows is a well known commercial operating system. They both offer different benefits so you will have to compare both options well before selecting one.

Keep your requirements in mind

The type of VPS that you should select will mainly depend on the requirements of your business. Your site must be able to handle both types of visitors. Linux would be suitable if you don't really have specific high requirements for your site and if you have a low budget. Since windows is used by plenty of users today you would be able to serve any user that uses windows. However, Linux does offer good performance levels and is certainly less expensive when compared to windows.

Reliability and Ease ...
... to Use

If you are not too knowledgeable when it comes to site administration then you should select windows for your VPS account because it offers remote desktop access and is easy to use. You would need to have some amount of knowledge about text commands when you use Linux. However, Linux offers better reliability when compared to windows. Windows would never be able to offer you 100% uptime but with Linux you will never have a problem with reliability. Because it is open source, you will be able to modify it any way you want so that you can handle programs, software of your choice along with higher loads.

Selecting the Right Option

Ultimately, the choice will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Windows offers Microsoft SQL, Access Support and other great utilities but will have to pay extra for it. The Express Version will only have limited features. If budget is your main concern, then Linux would be the right choice for you since you will get the features and power without having to pay too much for it. You will have to spend some time listing out the necessary features that you would want for your site before you select any particular option. With virtual private servers you would anyways get cost savings and great features. With little research, you would be able to select the right type of VPS operating system for your needs.
