A Groom's Speech Should Be A Well Prepared
Groom's speeches are a reflection of the wedding day itself. Like everything else about the day they should be well prepared and polished. That does not mean, of course, that the groom's speech should sound artificial and unlike what he would normally say. It simply means that he should work at it so that it sounds as though it is coming straight from the heart.
Most people can speak convincingly about their favourite sport, or their job. In fact sometimes you have trouble getting t hem to stop speaking. The same should apply to the groom's wedding speech because he should feel as familiar with it as he would if he were asked to describe his favourite football team.
So it means that he has to do his research. It means that he has to find out something about his new in-laws and what matters in their lives. Then he can casually mention that his new mother-in-law is an expert interior designer or that his new father-in-law goes fishing every weekend. Above all he has to find out about his new bride growing up so that he can surprise her by mentioning the name of her favourite doll or her first pony. He should make ...
... sure his speech mentions her relationship with her parents and how much he knows they mean to her. They will be glad to hear that on the day that he is taking her away from them as it were. He should promise that he will cherish and look after her because that is what parents want to hear.
Obviously he knows his own parents well but maybe his family are not the types to say I love you out loud. If he can say it that's wonderful but if he finds that difficult he might say that he learnt everything a man should know from his dad and that his mother had been his rock all his life. Alternatively, he could make a joke of it by saying that although they had listened to his homework they absolutely refused to listen to him practising his speech a thousand times but they were still the best parents in the world.
Naturally he should mention some of his bride's attributes and say how lucky he was to find her. He might add a word or two about the best man and their relationship. He could mention some of the exploits they had together. That is of course, if they were suitable for mixed company. Finally and with great sincerity he should toast the lovely bridesmaids.
