It might help if you had a better idea of what ear training is. Ear training is teaching your brain to understand and recognize more about the sounds your ears hear. Most people do this without thinking about it, but when it is done as a passive part of life it is a very slow process. The name ear training is deceptive since you are not actually training your ears or hearing at all, you are learning to train your brain.

The most obvious uses for this would be in music, audio production, or working with sound systems. However, these are not the only professions that make use of ear training. Have you ever met or heard of the automobile repair person who can diagnose the problem with the engine by listening to it run? These people have taught their brain to understand what the different sounds an engine can make mean. It was important to their ability to do their job in the most efficient way for them to know what each sound the engine made meant.

There are many examples of people who have trained themselves to recognize that sounds have meanings that are important to them. Another example would be a mother ...
... who teaches themselves what the different cries their baby makes mean. They do not deliberately set out to learn the meaning of the different cries it is generally an ongoing learning experience. However, most mothers can tell the difference between a cry of pain and a cry for hunger or attention. This carries over even to children that are not their own. There are certain tones within the cries that a mother or a father learn to understand.

This is ear training. However, these are examples of a passive form of ear training and take many years to accomplish. Some people have discovered that there are ways to make ear training quicker and more focused on specific areas. Being able to focus in on an area that you need to learn about makes it easier to choose a specific area to train your brain in. One example of this would be musicians that need to learn the correct chords for composing music. Another would be an audio technician that knows something is just a little off but can't identify exactly what the problem is. Translators that need to be able to learn new languages quickly and be sure their pronunciation is correct could use ear training.
