Have you ever wondered what could be the worst thing that could happen to your house? Shattered glass or a hole on the roof is some of the few things on that list. But one of the most annoying problems you would have to face is a wet basement. Whether you use the basement for storage or a function room, when water enters this area you're in for some problems. Here are a few tips on how you can go about to fixing and cleaning up the affected basement.

First off, start from the outside. If you notice that the basement is particularly moist or has a lot of puddles, the problem might be coming from a clogged gutter or a down-spout. After locating the foundation of the water have it fixed immediately.

Next is to cover the windows and plug all visible cracks or holes. Rainwater will seep through any nook or cranny in order to get in the foundation. It can pass through concrete blocks, wood, even pipes. When you find such problems, cover them with plastic well covers or fill them in with hydraulic cement. Once the cement has dried, raindrops won't be entering the room anymore.

After covering all possible gateways ...
... for water to enter, you want to dehumidify the air in the basement. Water easily carries around a myriad of infectious diseases and bacteria that can cause some serious risks to you and your household members. Don't wait for the water to seep in through the walls or ceilings, fungi and molds grow rapidly in an enclosed area.

If there are any personal belongings that were affected in the wet basement, dry them out under the sun or put in mini heaters throughout the room. Salvaging your belongings can be a tedious task, so try to ask your friends or family to help out to help cut down some costs.

If you want the job to be done excellently, don't think twice on calling the professionals. Their job is to help make your house clean and safe so that you won't have to go through this tiring process and also avoid such dreadful experience in the future.
